Mike's Awesome Wings!

Jacob's dad Mike made some tasty wings last Sunday and I had to post a picture of them. They were home made and fried in Canola oil which is a bit healthier than regular corn oil. They were crispy and spicy pieces of deliciousness (of which I probably had one too many due to how good they were).

Wing Night

So this past Wednesday was our epic wing night and I must say it was a success! The dinner (because we also made salad and served yams which in my book counts as "dinner") was a joint effort between me and Jacob and I daresay we make quite a good cooking team. Everything was cooked well and served in a timely manner. Ok, now on to the important stuff. The wing recipe (posted below) I found off Allrecipes.com and was pretty simple, not to many ingredients and the flavor lived up to our expectations. We did, however use boneless breast instead of actual wings because 1) I prefer breast meat over wing meat and 2) They were cheaper considering you get more of the actual meat than bones. The other cool thing about these wings is instead of being fried, the recipe just bakes them instead which gave them a softer outer coating, but the sauce still came through strong, and as a bonus they have less fat because of no added frying oil. Now, for the tallies...

Baked Buffalo Wings

Ingredients

• 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 20 chicken wings
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 1/2 cup hot pepper sauce (such as Frank's RedHot®)

Directions

1. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, and lightly grease with cooking spray. Place the flour, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and salt into a resealable plastic bag, and shake to mix. Add the chicken wings, seal, and toss until well coated with the flour mixture. Place the wings onto the prepared baking sheet, and place into the refrigerator. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.
2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
3. Whisk together the melted butter and hot sauce in a small bowl. Dip the wings into the butter mixture, and place back on the baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until the chicken is no longer pink in the center, and crispy on the outside, about 45 minutes. Turn the wings over halfway during cooking so they cook evenly.

Wing Recipe and some new stuff!

So I realize we are lagging behind on posting but it's not my fault that restaurants cost money and we are poor, lowly college students. However, in honor of saving money we will be making our own homemade hot wings this week. Yep, that's right people we are going to try and master the art of wing making. So, we will post the recipe and rate how our own wings turned out. Also, I (Janelle) have realized we are lacking in having pictures of the wings we partake in, which is indeed a sad fact to behold. Therefore, from this moment on I declare we start posting pictures of the spicy, gleaming gems we eat.

Blackboard Bistro

Last week we headed down to Seal Beach and ate at The Blackboard Bistro on PCH. It was our first visit and thankfully their wings did not disappoint. Upon arrival to our table the wings were steaming hot, which definitely matched the spice in their plentiful sauce. This sauce was the kind that made my eyes water just a little, but in my opinion that's how it should be! The highlight was that the wings were super tender and the meat was not dry or overcooked at all. I really think that meat texture is important because who wants to eat a piece of rubber... umm no thanks! So final tallies:

Alondra Hot Wings Restaurant & Grill

Our latest wing search led us to a restaurant called Alondra Hot Wings on Pine close to the Pike area. We ordered the regular hot wings and lets just say we were not impressed. The sauce was very thin and watery and didn't really coat the actual meat very well. The flavor of the sauce was just ok, nothing special. I also wasn't too happy with the wings themselves they were very rubbery and a bit dry. The one positive thing I can say is they have a variety of flavors, so maybe we will just have to go back and try another flavor. So here are the tallies:

Beach Pit BBQ

There hasn't been a post in so long, I have no choice but to blame school and some other stuff thats been going on. However, we did go to the Beach Pit BBQ and let me just say that I thought their smoked hot wings kicked ass! They arrived nice and hot and there was just the right amount of sauce. The sauce had the perfect blend of spiciness and BBQ flavor. The wings themselves were very tender and the meat wasn't rubbery or dry at all. So here are the tallies:

Woody's Diner

Last week we went to Woody's Diner in Seal Beach and ordered their hot wings and held our breath hoping that these would be saucier than the last wings we tried. Thankfully we were in luck, as the wings arrived hot, saucy and steaming from the basket. As me and Jacob took the first bite we were happily surprised as their was an overabundance of sauce and the wings spiciness was right on key with their overall flavor.
